Reptile Care At A Glance

This chart will help you see at a glance what reptile may be right for you. It lists 20 of the most often seen reptiles in pet shops. This is not a replacement for a good care book on the species that interests you. But, it will help you to quickly see the care involved to keep your pet reptile healthy and happy and whether it is the right pet for you.

Bearded Dragon

Care is easy. Good first pet for children. Live food should be either gut loaded or dusted with supplements.

Habitat – Desert setup with daytime temperatures of 80 – 90ᵒ Humidity 30%+

Heat Needed – Belly heat is needed for digestion, use rock heater or under tank heater.
Heat gradient is needed so place heat source at one end of terrarium.

Basking Spot Needed – Use Basking Spot Lamp or Power Sun or Ceramic Heat Emitter.
or Daylight Blue Bulb

UVB Light Needed – Use ReptiSun 5.0 or ReptiSun 10.0 or Power Sun

Substrates – Juvenile use Eco Carpet or Moss Mat
Adult use ReptiSand or Vita Sand or Excavator Clay

Supplemental Foods - Bearded Dragon Pelleted Food and All Can o’ Products (except snails)

Leopard Gecko

Care is Easy, but be sure to provide a hide to reduce stress. Nocturnal. Good pet for children. Live food should be either gut loaded or dusted with supplements.

Habitat – Desert setup with Daytime Temps of 75 – 85ᵒ Humidity 20 – 50%

Heat Needed – Heat gradient is needed so place heat source at one end of terrarium. Use under tank heater.

Basking Spot Needed – Use Nocturnal Infrared Heat Lamp or Nightlight Red Bulb or Moonlight Bulbs. This will also allow you to view your pet easier.

UVB Light – not needed

Substrates – Use Repti Sand or Vita Sand or Excavator Clay

Supplemental Foods – All Can o’ Products (except snails)

Tree Frog

Care is Easy. Be sure to have a good lid on your terrarium as these frogs can be escape artists. Should have plants to climb on. Use dechlorinated water in dish that frog can soak in. Mist daily.

Habitat – Semi-tropical with Daytime Temp of 74 -82ᵒ Humidity 50% +

Heat Needed – Depending on ambient temperature you may use an under tank heater or a Daylight Blue Bulb If supplemental heat is not needed use NatureSun to view and enjoy your pet.

UVB Light in not needed

Substrates – Eco Earth, Sphagnum Moss or Frog Moss to keep humidity elevated.

Supplemental Foods – Can o’ Crickets and Can o’ Worms

PacMan Frog

Care is Easy. Be sure to have a good lid on your terrarium as these frogs can be escape artists. Use dechlorinated water in dish that frog can soak in. Make sure frog can get into dish. Mist daily.

Habitat – Tropical with Daytime Temp 80 – 85ᵒ Humidity 50% +

Heat Needed – Depending on ambient temperature you may use an under tank heater. If supplemental heat is not needed use Nature Sun to view and enjoy your pet.

UVB Light is not needed

Substrates – Eco Earth, Sphagnum Moss or Frog Moss to keep humidity elevated. Substrate should be at least 2″ deep.

Aquatic Newt

Care is Easy. Use dechlorinated water. Use filter to keep water clean.

Habitat – Water Setup with Daytime Temps 65 – 75ᵒ

Heat Needed – Usually additional heat is not needed, but if water temp cannot be maintained use submersible heater.

UVB Light is not needed. Chose lighting for viewing your pet carefully. You do not want the temperature raised because of the lighting. Consider NatureSun.

Substrate – Aquarium gravel

Garter Snake

Care is Easy. Should have a hide and a water dish so that they can be fully submerged.

Habitat ~ Temperate with Daytime Temps of 72 – 84ᵒ Humidity 50%

Heat Needed – Usually additional heat is not needed unless kept in a cool part of the house. If so, use under tank heater.

UVB Light is not needed. Your snake will need day/night cycle. Consider Nature Sun or Daylight Blue Bulb

Substrate – Aspen Bedding or Eco Earth or Repti Bark

Supplemental Food ~ Can o’ Crickets

Kingsnake

Care is Easy. Should have a hide and a water dish so that they can be fully submerged, Kingsnakes are hardy snakes that are easy to tame.

Habitat ~ Temperate with Daytime Temps of 72 – 84ᵒ Humidity 30%

Heat Needed – Basking spot is needed, use Basking Spot Lamp. Usually additional heat is not needed unless kept in a cool part of the house. If so, use under tank heater.

UVB Light is not needed. Your snake will need day/night cycle. Consider Nature Sun or Daylight Blue Bulb

Substrate – Aspen Bedding or Eco Earth

Corn Snake

Colorful snake that makes a good first pet. Should have a hide and a water dish so that they can be fully submerged.

Habitat ~ Temperate with Daytime Temps of 75 – 88ᵒ Humidity 50%

Heat Needed – Basking spot is needed, use Basking Spot Lamp. Usually additional heat is not needed unless kept in a cool part of the house. If so, use under tank heater.

UVB Light is not needed. Your snake will need day/night cycle. Consider NatureSun Daylight Blue Bulb.

Substrate – Aspen Bedding or Eco Earth or Eco Carpet or Moss Mat

Anole

Care is easy, but you must remember to mist cage several times a day. Latest care information recommend using a dripper. Cage setup very important, try to use live plants.

Habitat ~ Tropical with Daytime Temps of 75 – 82ᵒ Humidity 50%+

Heat Needed ~ Needs heat gradient use under tank heater. Should have basking spot use Basking Spot Lamp. Heat gradient is needed so place heat source at one end of terrarium.

UVB Light Needed – Use ReptiSun 5.0 or ReptiSun 10.0 or Power Sun depending on size of terrarium.

Substrates ~ Eco Earth or Forest Floor or Repti Bark

Supplemental Foods ~ Can o’ Mini Crickets and Can o’ Worms

Aquatic Turtle

Care is intermediate. Use dechlorinated water. Know size of adult animal before you buy. Must have dry area to bask on and water area to swim in, so be sure you have adequate space for you turtle.

Habitat ~ Water Setup with Daytime Temps of 75 – 86ᵒ

Heat Needed ~ Basking spot needed above dry area, use Turtle Tuff as this bulb can handle “turtle splash”.

UVB Light Needed – Use ReptiSun 5.0 or ReptiSun 10.0 or Power Sun depending on size of terrarium.

Substrates ~ no substrate should be used in most cases. Be sure to have good filtration of the water.

Foods ~ Aquatic turtle food, be sure to get right size of pellet. Turtle Sticks are a complete food with vegetable matter included in the pelleted food.

Soft Shell Turtle

Care is Intermediate. Use dechlorinated water. Must have clean water or will be subject to fungal infections.

Habitat ~ Water Setup with Daytime Temps of 75 – 86ᵒ

Heat Needed ~ If air temperature is adequate no addition heat is needed, otherwise use submersible heater.

UVB Light Needed – Use ReptiSun 5.0 or ReptiSun 10.0 or Power Sun depending on size of terrarium.

Substrates ~ ReptiSand

Foods ~ Aquatic turtle food, be sure to get right size of pellet. Turtle Sticks are a complete food with vegetable matter included in the pelleted food. May enjoy Can o’ Shrimp.

Terrestrial Salamander

Care is Intermediate. Use dechlorinated water. Most salamanders need to be damp without being wet, so they must be misted often.

Habitat ~ Damp Woodlands. Temperature depends on species. Humidity is critical with these herps and varies with species.

Heat Needed ~ Needs heat gradient use under tank heater. Heat gradient is needed so place heat source at one end of terrarium.

UVB Light is not needed. Your pet will need day/night cycle. Consider NatureSun or low watt Daylight Blue Bulb. Watch amount of heat given off by incandescent bulbs.

Substrates – Eco Earth, Sphagnum Moss or Frog Moss to keep humidity elevated.

Supplemental Foods ~ Can o’ Worms and Can o’ Pillars

Boa Constrictor

Care is intermediate. Not a good first pet for children. Check size before acquiring pet.

Habitat ~ Tropical with Daytime Temps of 82 – 95ᵒ Humidity 50%+

Heat Needed – Needs heat gradient, use under tank heater. Basking spot is needed, use Basking Spot Lamp, Repti Halogen or Ceramic Heat Emitter. Heat gradient is needed so place heat source at one end of terrarium.

UVB Light is not needed. Your snake will need day/night cycle. Consider Nature Sun.

Substrates – Aspen Bedding or Eco Carpet or Moss Mat

Ball Python

Care is intermediate. Be sure snake is eating before acquiring. Ball Pythons have a shy nature be sure the snake has adequate hiding spots. This snake startles easily, so it takes time to become social.

Habitat – Tropical with Daytime Temps of 82 – 95 Humidity 50%

Heat Needed – Needs heat gradient, use under tank heater. Basking spot is needed, use Basking Spot Lamp, Repti Halogen or Ceramic Heat Emitter. Heat gradient is needed so place heat source at one end of terrarium.

UVB Light is not needed. Your snake will need day/night cycle. Consider NatureSun.

Substrates – Aspen Bedding or Forest Floor

Monitor and Tegu Lizard

Care is intermediate. Read about species thoroughly before choosing this species. May get very large so be sure you can house adult animal.

Habitat – This information varies greatly with the species you have chosen, but most will need daytime temps of 85 – 90ᵒ with humidity of 50%.

Heat Needed – Needs heat gradient, use under tank heater. Basking spot is needed, use Basking Spot Lamp, Repti Halogen or Ceramic Heat Emitter. Heat gradient is needed so place heat source at one end of terrarium.

UVB Light Needed – Use ReptiSun 5.0 or ReptiSun 10.0 or Power Sun depending on size of terrarium.

Substrates – Eco Carpet, Moss Mat Repti Bark or Aspen Bedding

Supplemental Foods – All Can o’ Products

Day Gecko

Care is intermediate. These are very beautiful lizards, but do not tolerate handling well.

Habitat – Tropical with Daytime Temp of 82 – 88ᵒ Humidity 50 – 85%

Heat Needed – Temperature very important. Do not allow temperature to drop more than 10 degrees at night. Use Ceramic Heat Emitter, if temperature cannot be maintained add an under tank heater.

UVB Light Needed – Use ReptiSun 5.0 or ReptiSun 10.0

Substrates – Eco Earth, Repti Bark or Forest Floor.

Supplemental Foods – Can o’ Mini Crickets and Can o’ Worms

Old World Chameleon

Care is Advanced. Reptibreeze Cage is highly recommended as proper air circulation is critical.

Habitat – Setup, temperature and humidity all depend on the species. Please do conciderable research on the species you are interested in.

Heat Needed – Temperature gradient important but with this species Air temperature must be controlled as chameleons are rarely on the ground. Often a Ceramic Heat Emitter works as day and night spot heat source.

UVB Light Needed – Use ReptiSun 5.0 or ReptiSun 10.0 or Power Sun

Substrates – Repti Bark or Forest Floor

Supplemental Foods -Most Can o’ Products

Box Turtle

Care is Advanced. This is not a reptile that can live a happy and healthy life in an aquarium. Must be able to bask when it needs to be warmer and must be able to burrow when it needs cooler surroundings.

Habitat – Tropical, different species need different temperatures and humidities. A general guideline would be daytime temperature of 70-85ᵒ Humidity of 60%+. Setup should include outdoor protected area. Make sure both indoor and outdoor area have both basking and burrowing area. Outdoor area should have some shade. Must have water area that it can soak in in both indoor and outdoor enclosure.

Heat Needed – Needs basking spot use Ceramic Heat Emitter.

UVB Light Needed – Use ReptiSun 5.0 or ReptiSun 10.0

Substrate – Mix 30% Forest Floor or Repti Bark with 70% Eco Earth.

Supplemental Foods – Pelleted box turtle food and most Can o’ Products. Favorites are Can o’ Snails and Can o’ Worms.

Tortoise

Care is Advanced. Research species well before buying. Know adult size-they can grow fast!

Habitat – There are so many species that you need to read a good book about the species you are interested in.

Heat Needed – Most species will need basking area, use Ceramic Heat Emitter or Basking Spot Lamp. Heat gradient is needed so place heat source at one end of terrarium.

UVB Light Needed – Use ReptiSun 5.0 or ReptiSun 10.0 or Power Sun

Substrates – Eco Carpet, Moss Mat, Eco Earth or Forest Floor

Supplemental Foods – Pelleted food, either grassland tortoise food or forest tortoise food depending on species.

Uromastyx Lizard

Care is Advanced

Beautiful lizards, but the high temperatures needed can make this species a challenge.

Habitat – Desert with Daytime Temps of 85-100ᵒ+ Humidity 20-50%

Heat Needed- Needs basking spot use Ceramic Heat Emitter. Needs belly heat to digest use under tank heater or rock heater. Heat gradient is needed so place heat source at one end of terrarium.

UVB Light Needed – Use ReptiSun 5.0 or ReptiSun 10.0 or Power Sun

Substrates – For hatchlings use Eco Carpet ot Moss Mat. For adults use Repti Sand or Excavator Clay.

Supplemental Foods – Pelleted iguana food and all Can o’ Products
